Responding to Trump, China opposed the proposed tariffs and said that "there are no winners in a trade war." Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokeswoman Mao Ning also said that Beijing "would safeguard its national interest."
EU chief Ursula von der Leyen declared that Europe was ready to negotiate with Trump while maintaining that Washington remained an important partner. The EU's "first priority will be to engage early, discuss common interests, and be ready to negotiate" with the president, she said.
Earlier, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with his counterparts from Australia, India, and Japan on Tuesday, marking the beginning of formal foreign policy discussions under the Trump administration.
The meeting focused on the Indo-Pacific “Quad,” a grouping seen by many as a countermeasure to China's growing assertiveness in the region, a concern raised by both President Trump and previous US leaders.
In a joint statement, the foreign ministers of the four nations expressed opposition to any unilateral actions aimed at changing the status quo through force or coercion. They also announced plans for regular meetings in the coming months to prepare for the upcoming leaders' summit, which will be hosted by India.
