Provincial police Chief Matiullah Khan says six other people were wounded in the explosion on Saturday in Kandahar province's Spin Boldak district.

Khan says the victims included children. He blames Taliban militants for planting the explosive.

Southern Afghanistan is the main center of the Taliban-led insurgency in the country.

More than 2,700 people, mostly militants, have died in insurgency-related violence this year, according to an Associated Press tally of figures from Afghan and Western officials.
