Ten people were killed on Tuesday night when Taliban militants attacked a luxury hotel frequented by foreign nationals in the Afghan capital, Xinhua reported.

The Intercontinental Hotel was targeted around 10.00 pm with small arms and rocket-propelled grenades.

"At least two rockets fired by the attackers slammed the hotel compound," a witness said. Gunshots were also heard.

Several people were injured.

Foreign and Afghan officials often visited the fortified hotel. No official was immediately available for comment.

Purported Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid told the media by telephone from an undisclosed location that the group was responsible for the attack.
