10 killed during clashes in disputed Sudan region

A government official in Southern Sudan says 10 people were killed when a militia attacked a police post in a disputed area.

A government official in Southern Sudan says 10 people were killed when a militia attacked a police post in a disputed area.

Deng Arop Kuol, the top government official in the disputed region of Abyei, alleges that the militia is supported by the northern government The fertile area is claimed by both north and south Sudan.

Kuol said Monday seven police officers and three fighters from the nomadic Misseriya tribe were killed in Sunday's attack.

He says the Misseriya fighters were using jeeps that belonged to the northern Sudanese Armed Forces.
Southern Sudan overwhelmingly voted for secession from northern Sudan in a January referendum. It is due to become independent in July.
