The incident took place late after a bomb exploded near the Gamal Abdel Naser metro station located near Egypt's Supreme Court building in downtown.

Three of the 12 injured people are in critical condition, said Mohamed Sultan, the head of the health ministry's ambulance service but denied any casualty.

The bomb disposal team and security forces rushed to the explosion site for investigations.

Militant attacks targeting police and military increased after the ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi last year and over 500 security personnel have been reportedly killed since then.
