The ISAF killed more than a dozen militants after they attacked an outpost in Nuristan, a coalition statement said.

The coalition forces took help of combat helicopters to locate the militants after an ISAF combat outpost received mortar fire, it said.

More than a dozen militants were killed and two vehicles belonging to the militants were destroyed.

A witness said that 12 civilians were also killed in the attack in Kamdesh district of the province, where the US-led coalition forces are based.

Around 2,000 people, including 700 civilians, have been killed in insurgency related violence so far this year in Afghanistan.
