"One hundred and twenty rebels have been killed by border police and another 182 arrested. The rebels are trying to stir insecurity and to traffick in drugs and arms," said Colonel Ebrahim Karimi, deputy border police commander.

The rebels and traffickers killed 19 police, he said, without specifying where the clashes had taken place.

Most such violence has centred on the border provinces in the east with Pakistan and Afghanistan, but also in western Iran on the frontiers with Turkey and Iraq.
