At least 22 LTTE cadres were killed in fierce clashes with security forces in the embattled north of Sri Lanka even as two soldiers lost their lives in the violence, officials said in Colombo on Monday.
While two LTTE cadres were killed in Northern Janakapura in North-east Welioya on Sunday, two others were gunned down by security forces in Kiribanwewa in the region on the same day, they said.
Meanwhile, troops launched a fierce attack and captured a LTTE fighting "trench" on Sunday afternoon at Janakapura, the Defence Ministry said adding a soldier lost his life in the action.
Separately, one Tamil Tiger rebel was gunned down and three others injured in a gun battle in Vediwattukal in Vavuniya yesterday, the Media Centre for National Security (MCNS) said.
Four Tiger rebels were gunned down last morning in Periyamadu area in Vavuniya yesterday, the Defence Ministry said.
In another incident, at least five LTTE cadres and a soldier were reported killed in Palampiddi in Vavniya yesterday, the MCNS said.
A LTTE militant was killed during a confrontation with troops in Muhamale in Jaffna peninsula last morning, it said.
At least five LTTE rebels were killed in clashes with security forces at Palamoddai in Vavuniya on Sunday, the Defence Ministry added.
