Thirty-four people were hurt when a Philippine Airlines jet overshot a runway at an airport in the southern island of Mindanao, careering into a coconut grove, the flag carrier said on Friday.

The Airbus A320 carrying 148 passengers and six crew members was travelling from the capita Manila to Butuan, in the north of the island.
The plane sustained some damage as it nosed into a grove of coconut and banana tees. The cause of the accident was no immediately known, a PAL spokesman told AFP.
Thirty-four passengers were taken to hospital or treatment, but all but one have been discharged, PAL said in a statement.
Authorities shut down the Butuan airport as experts evaluated safety conditions at the facility.
