4 die, 3 missing after HK, S Korean ships collide off

Four people died and three went missing after a Hong Kong cargo vessel and a South Korean fishing boat collided last night in waters west of Japan's main island of Kyushu, the Japan Coast Guard said on Sunday.

Four people died and three went missing after a Hong Kong cargo vessel and a South Korean fishing boat collided last night in waters west of Japan's main island of Kyushu, the Japan Coast Guard said on Sunday.

The 29-ton fishing boat 3 Dae Kyong capsized after colliding with the 3,843-ton freighter Joshu Maru around 10 PM (local time) yesterday on the high seas about 130 kilometres west of Fukue Island, Nagasaki Prefecture, the coast guard said.

Of the nine crew members aboard the fishing boat, two of South Korean nationality were rescued by the cargo vessel. But four were found dead inside the boat by South Korean authorities and the remaining three are missing.

Seven of the nine crew members are South Korean and two are Indonesian, according to the coast guard.

The 7th Regional Coast Guard Headquarters, Japan's Maritime Self-Defense Force and the Korea Coast Guard are searching for the three using airplanes and vessels.
