Rescuers were struggling to reach the site of the crash, which happened early in the afternoon, he said.

Rieder said the identities of the victims hadn't been confirmed. Local newspaper Walliser Bote cited unidentified sources as saying the alarm was raised after the plane, traveling from Lausanne to Sion, disappeared from the radar and radio contact was lost.
