Elite Algerian forces have killed 20 Al-Qaeda militants in an attack on a fortified position of the terrorist group in the northern part of the country.

The reports said that Monday's offensive, supported by helicopters, on the Al- Qaeda position in the forest-covered mountains, some 150 km east of the Algerian capital, brought to 24 the total number of Al-Qaeda fighters killed there since mid-July.

Algerian forces engaged some 60 Al-Qaeda militants who had gathered for a meeting on July 13. A number of Al Qaeda fighters were captured, while some others escaped.
