It was not immediately clear from Xinhua’s report how the fire started. The report said the inferno had left an unspecified number of people injured.

More than 10 people managed to escape from the bus, which caught fire near the city zoo, in the northern part of the city, according to Xinhua.

Xinhua quoted one of its reporters at the scene as saying several ambulances had been dispatched.

Graphic images, believed to be from the blaze, were posted on Chinese websites, showing the bus engulfed in flames and casualties covered in blood.
