However, overall the scent of coffee will kick-start. 26% of Britons into life, although 27% of men say the smell of eggs, bacon, sausages and fried bread wafting from the kitchen is the enticement they need to get going in the morning, according to the survey.

Phil Atherton of bedding firm Slumberdown, which carried out the survey, said: “This research shows beyond doubt that the scents we traditionally associate with the morning are the ones that act as the best wake-up stimulants.”
