Driver sentenced to death for running over girl: report
A Chinese man was sentenced to death for killing an 8 year-old girl by running her over and dragging her more than 100 metres under his car.
A Chinese man was sentenced to death on Thursday for killing an eight-year-old girl by running her over and dragging her more than 100 metres under his car, state media reported.
Peng Jiang, who did not have a driver's licence, drove onto the pavement and hit a pedestrian before careering into the victim, Wen Mengtian, a court in the southwestern city of Chongqing heard, according to Xinhua news agency.
Despite knowing the young girl was under his car, Peng continued to drive, urged on by two passengers who both received jail sentences of seven years, the report said.
The three then sped away from the scene, leaving the victim, who later died of brain injuries following the January incident, Xinhua said.
Chinese roads have become increasingly dangerous as car ownership has grown along with economic wealth.
They are now regarded as among the most dangerous in the world, with more than 81,000 people killed in traffic accidents last year, or about 223 fatalities a day.
