Two bodies were found on Sunday in a flooded tunnel and nine more were recovered during a search and rescue operation in the Greater Accra region overnight, said Kofi Portuphy, coordinator of the National Disaster Committee.

Police said many others were feared dead.

"We have had several reports from the affected areas of people missing," said police spokeswoman Olivia Turkson, adding some residents climbed trees as their homes were swept away.

Seasonal rains in West Africa, which tend to start in June and last through October, often cause deadly floods.

Ghana is one of the region's top economies, the world's second biggest supplier of cocoa and Africa's second largest gold miner.
