Fire crews, police and civilians on boats were checking to see if anyone else was trapped in the ship, the Carolina do Norte, which rolled over as it was being taken into a port on the Negro river near the city of Manaus.

The boat was being tugged after its steering broke down on Tuesday, officials said.

An investigation was launched into the accident.
