The authorities said a group of Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) opened fire at the bus at the 49th mile post along the Buttala-Kataragama main road around 10.15 a.m., killing three passengers instantly.

The bus was plying from Moneragala towards Kataragama in a region dominated by the majority Sinhalese community.

The victims included two women and a 12-year-old child, the ministry said, quoting sources at the Kataragama hospital. A fourth victim succumbed to injuries at the Hambantota hospital.
