A police officer in Diyala province said six of the men were killed Sunday when gunmen ambushed a minibus carrying them from the town of Mandali near the Iranian border.

The men were members of the Awakening Councils, which are armed groups that have joined forces with the Americans and the government to fight insurgents.

Tribal leader Sheik Talab al-Nidawi confirmed the killings. Another police officer said another Sunni guard was killed when gunmen fired at a checkpoint in Tarmiyah.

Both police officers spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the press.
