The unidentified men stormed the jail in Baram, south Darfur, on Sunday and freed the prisoners before fleeing in two cars, according to the Sudan Media Centre (SMC) which is close to the intelligence services.

Witnesses quoted in the independent daily Al-Sudani said the armed men took eight of the prisoners with them, adding that two prison guards were injured in the attack.

Authorities have launched an investigation to identify the culprits, the reports said.

The five year-conflict in Darfur has killed at least 200,000 people and displaced two million more according to UN figures.
