Chelsy Davy, former girlfriend of Prince Harry, changed her relationship status to "not in one" in the social net-working websight Facebook, accompanied by the symbol of a broken red heart.
She also signaled three things to the wider world: one, that she was not interested in talking to the press about it, two, that she was not interested in weepy post-mortems with friends and three, most importantly, that she controlled the situation.
She is not the first person to declare herself single online. Jimmy Wales, founder of the internet encyclopedia Wikipedia, used his own website to announce the end of a relationship.
His girlfriend responded promptly by posting photos of herself on eBay modelling clothing that Wales left behind in her flat.
