Transportation ministry official Herry Bakti Gumay says the airport in Yogyakarta, 20 miles from the volcano, reopened on Saturday after scientists said the air over the city was safe for flights.

A series of eruptions since Oct 26 blasted large amounts of volcanic ash into the air and down the mountain's slopes.

The National Disaster Management Agency says the death toll from the eruptions has risen to 292 after some victims died of their injuries and more bodies were recovered from the debris.
