Pasha was set to retire last year but his term was extended until March. Now that term has further been extended on grounds that the country was facing a security crisis and that continuity in the key areas was needed. He will now serve as Pakistan’s top spy till March 2012.

Prime minister Gilani said that the Pakistan was passing through a critical stage and needed continuity in its key institutions. The same argument was given when Gilani went on state television to announce the extension in service of Pakistan’s army chief, General Perwez Ashfaq Kayani.
