Israeli troops shot dead a Palestinian militant in the city of Nablus in the occupied West Bank on Tuesday, Palestinian medical staff said.

Local residents said 38-year-old Nasser Mabrouk of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, a secular militant group, was killed during a clash with the troops in a refugee camp in Nablus.

An Israeli army spokeswoman said troops spotted an armed man while they were operating in the area and established they had hit him.

On Monday, an Israeli missile strike killed six Hamas militants in the Gaza Strip, making it the deadliest day for many weeks in action between Israeli troops and Palestinian militants.
