The latest tremor at around 2130 GMT registered 3.8 on the Richter scale, according to Rainews 24 television.

It occurred a few hours after the strongest aftershock since Monday's quake registered 5.3 on the scale and caused new damage in L'Aquila, the mediaeval town worst hit by the quake.

The original earthquake, which killed at least 235 people and reduced historic buildings to rubble, measured 5.8 on the Richter scale.
