Pradeep Kodippily, national co-ordinator of the disaster management centre said five people were killed by lightning in Moneragala, Gampaha and Ratnapura districts during the weekend.

The island has been experiencing heavy rains since Friday, Xinhua reported.

Kodippily said Badulla district's main highway between Badulla and Haputale was closed on Sunday following landslides.

Several roads in Galle district were also blocked due to floods, officials said.
