Magnitude 5.3 quake hits northwest China

An earthquake measuring 5.3 degrees on the Richter Scale hit a northwestern region of China on Wednesday followed by two moderate aftershocks.

An earthquake measuring 5.3 degrees on the Richter Scale hit a northwestern region of China today followed by two moderate aftershocks.

The Toksun County, Turpan Prefecture in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region was shaken by the earthquake this morning, according to the China Earthquake Networks Centre.

The epicentre was monitored at 43.0 degrees north latitude and 88.3 degrees east longitude with a depth of about five kilometres, the centre said.

Two major aftershocks measuring 4.2 and 4.1 degrees respectively on the Richter Scale struck the same site at 9:54 and 10:00 am (local time), a Xinhua reported quoted the the centre as saying.
