Minor radioactive leak at Japanese nuclear plant

A small amount of radioactive water leaked at a nuclear plant being decommissioned in Japan but there was no risk to people’s health or the environment, officials said on Friday.

A small amount of radioactive water leaked at a nuclear plant being decommissioned in Japan but there was no risk to people’s health or the environment, officials said on Friday.

The leak was spotted on Thursday at the Fugen Nuclear Power Plant, in central Fukui prefecture, which was shut down in 2003.

“One worker was exposed but the level was far below the limit set by government regulation” to ensure the health of employees, said Kaoru Bando, a spokesman for the Japan Atomic Energy Agency.
