Moderate quake strikes off Indonesia's Maluku

A moderate 5.7-magnitude undersea earthquake struck in Indonesia's eastern Maluku province on Friday, meteorologists said, but there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.

A moderate 5.7-magnitude undersea earthquake struck in Indonesia's eastern Maluku province on Friday, meteorologists said, but there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.

The quake occurred at 2:40 pm (0540 GMT) with its epicentre 117 kilometres (73 miles) northwest of Ambon city, the Indonesian Meteorological and Geophysics Agency said on its website.

It struck at a depth of 16 kilometres and no tsunami warning was issued.

Indonesia sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, where the meeting of continental plates causes high volcanic and seismic activity.
