The quake struck at 7:13 am (0013 GMT), 36 kilometres (22 miles) northwest of Ujung Kulon, West Java, at a depth of 10 kilometres, the geophysics and meteorological agency said.

"The shaking was felt in many areas, including Jakarta, but the quake was not damaging," agency technical head Suharjono told AFP.

Indonesia sits on the Pacific "Ring of Fire," where the meeting of continental plates causes high volcanic and seismic activity.
