Nine injured in blast at Japan construction site

An explosion ripped through a Japanese construction site on Thursday and injured nine workers, four of them seriously, officials said.

An explosion ripped through a Japanese construction site on Thursday and injured nine workers, four of them seriously, officials said.

The blast destroyed a half-built garbage incineration plant in the western city of Himeji at about 9:00 am (0000 GMT), police and emergency services officials said.

"The explosion occurred apparently when the workers lit welding equipment," said a police officer. "Some sort of gas must have built up in some space."
