Obama, vacationing in Hawaii, got updates from Homeland Security and counter-terrorism advisor John Brennan and National Security Council chief of staff Denis McDonough at 6 am (1600 GMT), said Bill Burton, a White House spokesman.
The president sought information on the investigation into the incident, new airline security measures he ordered into place following the attack on Thursday and reviews into terror watch lists and detection procedures.
"The president will continue to receive intelligence updates and monitor the situation closely throughout the day," Burton said.
Earlier, Obama's chief spokesman Robert Gibbs told ABC News that the president had ordered two "look back" reviews into the alleged attempt by a 23-year-old Nigerian man to blow up a Northwest jet as it approached Detroit.
