Obama presses for more nuclear in US energy mix

President Barack Obama announced some $8 billion in loan guarantees on Tuesday to build the first US nuclear power plant in nearly three decades and said he saw some common ground with Republicans on climate legislation.

Obama, a Democrat, said the United States needed to increase its supply of nuclear power to meet the country's energy needs and to fight climate change.

Obama did not mention the recipient of the investment by name, but administration officials said the $8.3 billion loan guarantee would go to help Southern Co build two reactors at a plant in the state of Georgia.
