The officials say the gunmen arrived in an open skiff late on Monday at a waterside construction site on the lagoon that bisects Lagos. One worker escaped by jumping into the water. The attackers sped off with the other man, according to the officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to company prohibitions on dealings with the media. A police spokesman couldn't immediately be reached for comment.

Foreign workers are routinely kidnapped for ransom in Nigeria's restive southern oil region but such attacks are rare in this city of 16 million people. There was no indication of involvement by oil-region militants.
