Islamist militants are waging a violent campaign against the government and its security forces with numerous bomb attacks in the northwest of the country, near the Afghan borer.
Lahore, near the border with India, has seen some serious bomb attacks over the past couple of years but generally it has been more peaceful than the northwest.
