The fishermen were arrested off the island's north-western coast of Thalaimannar.

Navy spokesman Commander D.K.P. Dassanayake told IANS that the group of Indian fishermen was arrested yesterday around 10 am while illegally entering Mannar waters in two trawlers.

"We arrested them on suspicion as they came so close to the shore of Mannar, just five km away. We wonder why they came so close to the shore," Dassanayake said.

He said that the Indian fishermen have now been handed over to the Mannar police.
