Col Arif Khan says the blast occurred Saturday in the town of Bhat Khela after troops spotted the man and asked him to surrender. Bhat Khela is part of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in northwest Pakistan.
Pakistan's military carried out an offensive in the parts of the province in 2009 aimed at rooting out militants there. Bhat Khela is located about 30 miles (50 kilometers) west of Mingora, the main town in the Swat Valley.
