Taiwanese coastguards opened fire on a Chinese fishing boat today and arrested three men who were found using dynamite to poach in the island's waters, officials said.

The Chinese fishing vessel was intercepted off Kinmen, a Taiwan-controlled group of fortified islands near China's southeastern city of Xiamen, the officials said.

The boat ignored demands to be inspected by Taiwanese coastguards and sped away, prompting the coastguards to unleash a hail of bullets at the intruders, video images released by the coastguards showed.

The Chinese fishermen were caught unhurt.
