Thousands homeless as floods ravage southern Sri Lanka

At least three people have been killed and nearly 76,000 left homeless after torrential monsoon rains struck parts of Sri Lanka, officials said today.

At least three people have been killed and nearly 76,000 left homeless after torrential monsoon rains struck parts of Sri Lanka, officials said today. More than 2300 houses have also been damaged in the flood during the last few days, the Disaster Management Centre said in a statement.

The MeT department has further cautioned that the current rainy conditions will continue to prevail in the southern part of the island. The country's biggest hydro electricity dam, the Victoria, opened its sluice gates on Saturday for the first time in three years because of too much of water in the reservoir.
