Detailing his plan to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, National Security Adviser Tom Donilon sought to reassure Israel that Washington is prepared to act military should diplomacy and sanctions fail to pressure Iran to abandon its nuclear enrichment programme. Both nations think Iran’s programme is aimed at making bombs.

During his Israel visit, presidential candidate Mitt Romney said Jerusalem is Israel’s capital, drawing strong criticism from Palestinians. They accused him of undermining peace prospects by ignoring their own claims to the city and most world opinion.
