A woman suffered a serious sexual assault at a prestigious polo event in southern England which attracts celebrities and Britain's social elite, police said.

A woman suffered a serious sexual assault at a prestigious polo event in southern England which attracts celebrities and Britain's social elite, police said on Thursday.

The 23-year-old was attacked after losing her friends at the Veuve Clicquot Gold Cup tournament held at Cowdray Park in the town of Midhurst, Sussex, in July, detectives said.

The victim had gone to a nearby field where cars were parked at about midnight when she was attacked.

"This was a particularly nasty assault, and although a number of lines of enquiry have been followed up we need the help of the public to try and get some more information," said Detective Sergeant Mark Gowling.

"The Gold Cup tournament is a particularly busy event and there were hundreds of people attending the parties in the evening."
