The owner of the scrap yard had asked the two workers to cut the 100kg bomb, which he had purchased from a local who found it in an open area in Jeram, into smaller pieces at the scrap yard in Kampung Batu Dua, the Star daily reported.

The bomb exploded at about 1530 hours (local time) as the workers, an Indian national and a Bangladeshi, were cutting through the centre, without realising what it was.

The blast was heard up to 2km, shocking residents and shattering windowpanes. A working hostel located at the back of the compound caught fire as a result of the blast, the report said.

The Indian worker died on the way to the Sungai Buloh Hospital while the other died at the intensive care unit.
