Commuters in Delhi-NCR will be able to book an e-rickshaw through a mobile app from next week.

Taxi aggregator Ola will start providing battery-operated rickshaws on its platform. PM Narendra Modi launched e-rickshaws on the Ola app as part of the ‘Stand Up India’ initiative in Noida on Tuesday.

Ola officials said only registered e-rickshaws will be provided through the app. The fare will be Rs 25 for the first 2 kilometres and Rs 8 for every subsequent kilometer. Ola said pooling option will be introduced later.

5,100 Ola e-rickshaws were launched in partnership with Bhartiya Micro Credit (BMC) at the event and will be deployed across Delhi, Gurgaon, Noida, Faridabad and Ghaziabad.

“This will be further scaled up in the coming months to small towns and Tier 3 cities across the country. We will have 1,000 each in NCR cities,” said a company spokesperson.

Transport department officials said they have registered over 4,000 e-rickshaws in Delhi and they won’t have any issues, if e-rickshaws operate with Ola. “E-rickshaws, which are not registered with the government, will face action,” said a transport department official.

Ola will train drivers in handling the app and also teach them how to behave with customers and take payments.

“It’s an honour to support PM Modi’s ‘Stand-up India’ initiative aimed at empowering thousands of e-rickshaw driver-partners, with innovative micro-entrepreneurship solutions and technology platform,” said Pranay Jivrajka, chief operating officer, Ola.

Ola said that after a week of trial run, e-rickshaws will be available for booking.

“Ola’s e-rickshaws will give rickshaw-pullers an opportunity to enhance skills and become driver-entrepreneurs. It will also give them access to consistent demand through the Ola app on their smartphones. These green, affordable and sustainable vehicles involve lower human effort compared to pulled rickshaws,” he said.
