“I was observing maunvrat (a vow of silence) when they were assaulting Manjula Shetye,” says former media bigwig Indrani Mukerjea, who is facing murder charges in the Sheena Bora case.
Mukerjea is now one of the witnesses in the Shetye murder case and her statement was recorded on September 1. Her statement too is now a part of the charge sheet filed against the six jail staff.
In her statement, Mukerjea said, “At 11:15 (on June 23), constable Aarti Shingne was dragging Shetye towards the first floor, while constable Bindu Naikade was holding her from behind. I saw that the three were followed by jailer Manisha Pokharkar, and constables Shital Shegaonkar, Surekha Gulve and Waseema Shaikh. I saw that Shegaonkar had a stick and she hit Shetye with it on her legs.”
Mukerjea said that Shetye’s saree was untied and her hair too was messed up. “Since I was observing maunvrat, I was not speaking to anyone. I gestured to stop Shaikh, but she ignored and headed to the first floor,” she said. After 15 to 20 minutes, they, Mukerjea said, were washing their hands with shampoo, while Shegaonkar was holding a stick. She later learnt that Shetye died of her injuries sustained during the assault. Mukerjea had been lodged in barrack number 2.
According to her, she also witnessed the assault on Fazleen Shaikh in the jail on April 11.
Shaikh was allegedly beaten up thrice on that day by Pokharkar and other staff. Mukerjea claimed that she had been to the office of the jailer when Shaikh was being beaten and also questioned the staff on why she was being beaten. However, like other inmates, Mukerjea too did not complain about the incident to the authorities. Later, she claimed that on the day when Shetye was being beaten up, she was pacing the barrack passage.
