Indian pugilist Sumit Sangwan remained on course for securing his berth for the Rio Olympics after entering the quarterfinals of the AIBA World Olympic Qualification tournament in the men’s light heavyweight (81kg) category in Baku on Tuesday.

The 23-year-old displayed a superior performance, thrashing Mongolian opponent Erdenebayar Sandagsuren 3-0 in the pre-quarterfinal round.

A victory in the next round will guarantee Sangwan’s spot for the Rio Olympics, which starts from August 5.

The tournament has 39 qualifying spots up for grabs -- two in the 49 kg category, five each in 52 kg, 56 kg, 60 kg, 64 kg, 69 kg, 75 kg and 81 kg, and one each in 91kg and +91kg.
