Tragedy struck a family when a 20-year-old boy and his uncle drowned in the Bhakra Canal at Samana, 20 km from here, on Tuesday night.

Under stress due to financial crisis, Jaspal Singh Jassi of Samana jumped into the canal and when his uncle, Hansraj, tried to save him, he, too, drowned in the process. The bodies of both haven’t been recovered yet.

“The family has been facing economic crisis due to the marriage of my daughter, who was got married recently. I told my son about the economic conditions of the family. He was in tension and was not even eating his meals properly. Last night when he left the house, I asked my brother Hansraj to go with him. The boy jumped into the Bhakra canal and my brother also jumped to save him. But both are missing since last night,” said Jassi’s father.

The family members had been waiting for the bodies at Khanori Bhakra canal.

Meanwhile, people of the area said, “There was no security at the canal. Had there been some security personnel, the boy and his uncle could have been be saved.”

Samana police station in-charge Inspector Ranbir Singh, said, “We have collected all information and the case is being investigated. We are trying to recover the bodies and after postmortem, we will take further action according to the report.”
