Punjabi singer Jassi Jasraj alias Jasraj Singh Longia has surprised many by securing Aam Admi Party (AAP) ticket from Bathinda constituency.

Former director general of police Sashi Kant and AAP's state convener Sumel Singh were also in the race for the ticket from here.

Jassi was also a contender for the AAP ticket from Anandpur Sahib constituency from where lawyer Himmat Singh Shergill was fielded.

SAD(B) candidate Harsimrat Kaur Badal and Congress-PPP joint candidate Manpreet Singh Badal are the other candidates in the high-profile poll battle.

Apart from being a singer, Jassi also worked in a Punjabi movie 'Bikar Bai Sentimental' against Bollywood actress Preeti Jhangiani.

His character in the movie carries a 'pava' (wooden leg of bed) as weapon to teach a lesson to corrupt people.

Jassi smartly tries to project his movie character in real world and always carries the 'pava' with him. He had visited Bathinda three days ago with 'pava' in his hand.

He used to carry this 'pava' in all the events of the AAP and it would be not surprising if he uses the same in his election campaign.

Jassi is a known face and his videos, based on Sikh issues, got a very good response. However, it would be interesting to see if he would make any impact in the poll scene where legendary Punjabi singer Kuldeep Manak was defeated while contesting on the ticket of Lok Yudh Morcha in 1996.

Manak had failed to save his security deposit despite his popularity as a folk singer.
