In a blow to the Chandigarh municipal corporation (MC), it got only Rs 84 crore , down from the last fiscal’s Rs 102 crore, a cut of Rs 18 crore in the Union budget for 2016-17 announced on Monday.

The MC had proposed a budget of Rs 572 crore under the plan head and Rs 500 crore under the non-plan head during MC House meeting held on February 12. Mayor Arun Sood had then claimed that he would bring grant-in-aid of Rs 547 crore from the Chandigarh administration.

The Congress members on Monday said: “You gave lollipop to city residents by approving the budget,” as they offered him lollipop during the House meet.

The mayor said they threw lollipops at me and even broke a glass lying on my table. Regarding the cut in the budget, the mayor said: “The Congress is to be blamed for this as during its tenure, it failed to utilise the budget following which Centre took a harsh step and slashed our budget. We will pursue our case with UT administration and the Union government and will ensure that no development work is hit.”

For mer mayor Subhash Chawla said: “Last year, city MP Kirron Kher had claimed of additional water to the city from Kajauli, but now chances are dim. Last year, they promised that the MC will get Rs 148 crore under plan head, but due to the failure of the MP, we got only Rs 102 crore.”
