Why corruption probes fail to achieve results

CBI investigations in India are often politicized, which may lead to corruption in high places and violation of natural justice

Snooping is intolerable in a democratic society

It is vital to recognise that phone tapping impinges on democracy and the protection of every citizen’s fundamental right to privacy

The latest instance of plundering of sensitive commercial information came from the National Stock Exchange (NSE), an organisation one wouldn’t expect to be associated with underhand dealings. We should take lessons from this shocking episode. (REUTERS)

Act quickly and without bias in PFI investigation

Both the NIA and the ED have their work cut out for them. They will have to track down other unidentified elements associated with the PFI before they can reorganise themselves. Unravelling their international connections is of paramount importance

In the early days, police response on the PFI was tardy and sporadic. But the political direction is clear now and in favour of tough action (PTI)

Beyond diversity, a well-oiled bureaucracy needs to counter structural malaise

Diversity is a key driver of a well-functioning bureaucracy. But is this enough to ensure an administration that is benevolent to the common man in the remotest villages of our country? I am afraid the answer is no.

A senior civil service of any country cannot beget legitimacy and acceptability without such broad-spectrum composition. (HT Photo)

To fix India’s criminal justice system, weed out the corrupt first

Cadre row: Put aside political differences

This kind of conflict will remain unmitigated, unless both sides show greater maturity and put aside their political differences. The unfortunate truth is that neither side has shown itself to be a paragon of virtue in handling personnel matters

One cannot forget the commendable role played by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the then home minister who resisted the misconceived attempts by some powerful politicians to influence the government to wind up the Indian Civil Service and the Indian Police Service (IPS). But for the Sardar, we wouldn’t have the present-day IAS and IPS. (HT Photo)

The courts must crack down on prolonged detentions, make bail the general rule

Agencies should not blindly oppose the bail application of a suspect. Continued detention is justified only if there is a reasonable apprehension that the arrestee will disappear, tamper with the available evidence or intimidate witnesses

The judiciary has a sacred duty here to protect every citizen’s fundamental rights (PTI)

Blame netas and babus for the rot in Tamil Nadu’s bureaucracy

The raids at the state’s former chief secretary’s house and other places cast a huge shadow on the manner in which top appointments are made in Tamil Nadu, where honest and upright civil servants are sidelined to avoid resistance while implementing dubious policies. This may be equally true of many other states. But Tamil Nadu takes the cake for maltreatment of upright civil servants and a distinct preference for those with a dubious reputation
