Madhya Pradesh-based actor Rahul Chelani has been detained by the police with Rs 43 lakh in new banknotes of denomination Rs 500 and Rs 2000 in Hoshangabad district.
Chelani has appeared in various roles on television and in films. He has appeared in shows such as Savdhan India.
The police made the seizure during a routine check of vehicles near Bhopal Tiraha on the Bhopal-Hoshangabad Road on Thursday afternoon. When the police team stopped an Innova car bearing a Bhopal registration number, they found the occupants to be Chelani, his relative and a driver.
The vehicle’s number plate also bore the legend ‘President Anti Corruption Society’, Hoshangabad Kotwali in-charge MS Chouhan said.
“We’ve detained the actor, his relative and the driver for questioning. During primary questioning, the actor has told the police that he was going to hand over the proceeds of sale of a house to his maternal uncle in Hoshangabad,” said Chouhan.
However, another police officer forming part of the questioning said that the SUV in which the actor was seated was going towards Bhopal and not towards Hoshangabad.
“We’ve informed the Income Tax department in Bhopal about the matter and the cash has been seized,” said Chouhan.
